Island Park / West Yellowstone -- Snow and Avalanche Information

Snow / Avalanche Information

This web site will provide one-stop access to daily snow, avalanche, weather and trail information for the Island Park--West Yellowstone Area from 12/1 to 4/15.  This site is now mostly automated and gets it's information from the NRCS Weather Center Snowtel sites.

This site is designed to be a help to those planning a ski, sled, board or snowmobile trip to this mountainous terrain.  Visitors should carefully read and study all of the "NOTES" and "CAUTIONS" on this page, and on the "Avalanche 101" page.

Snowfall and snow-depth data are taken from the site locations (circled numbers 1--6) on this map, and conditions are show in the table below.

Caution:  Backcountry users should be aware that pockets of snow instability likely exist that are at least one level higher hazard than the avalanche forecast rating in any given area.  These pockets are the main source of slides when the avalanche hazard is only rated as "MODERATE", which statistics show is the hazard forecast rating when many human triggered avalanches occur (see examples).

Publisher's NOTE:  Be sure you have adequate avalanche awareness training, knowledge, and equipment-- BEFORE you approach avalanche terrain.              The B-T and Gallatin N.F. Avalanche Centers are the closest available source of Forest Service avalanche hazard evaluation and forecasts, and are general in their application.  Due to the variability in weather and avalanche conditions in the mountains, it is important that visitors to the Island park and West Yellowstone Area study the two available hazard forecasts (above), along with the snow and weather information herein and cautiously make their own evaluations of avalanche hazard in this area.  This should include snow-pit studies in the area you plan to visit.  Click on the National Avalanche Center for more infor.
